Ancient Noto or Netum, is the ancient inhabited area of ​​Noto destroyed following the earthquake of 11 January 1693. Municipium under the dominion of the Romans, capovalle from the Arab domination onwards and decorated with the title of Civitas ingenious by Ferdinand the Catholic, was home many prominent elements between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, as well as one of the main cultural, military and economic centers of south-eastern Sicily. Surrounded by imposing walls (many of which still standing) and by deep valleys of Mount Alveria, it was never taken by force. Only the violent earthquake of 1693 managed to destroy it, causing over 60 thousand victims in the Val di Noto.
